Buying guide · Updated 9 October 2026

Rugby boots and balls should match the player, playing surface and club requirements. Compare the exact configuration before buying a familiar badge or copying a teammate’s kit. This guide separates ball-size choices from boot and stud choices so each purchase fits its purpose.

Choose the ball size your team uses

Confirm the required size with your club or coach. Age-group and competition arrangements can differ, so do not infer suitability from a team logo or colour. A size 4 and a size 5 ball are different products even when their listed prices are close.

Then compare intended use: regular training, match use and novelty or beach play are not the same choice. Check grip, construction, inflation instructions and whether a pump is included. The Gilbert examples below show two sizes rather than a performance ranking.

Moulded or screw-in boots?

Begin with the actual surface and your club’s requirements. Moulded and screw-in soles have different arrangements; a higher price does not make one correct for all conditions. Check the manufacturer’s intended surface and any competition rules that apply to your kit.

In this snapshot, the R500 FG listing is £34.99 and the Kakari SG listing is £64.99. Compare their different sole configurations before judging the £30 difference. Fit, maintenance and replacement-stud availability may matter more than the appearance of the upper.

Check fit and the complete match-day kit

Try the fit with the socks you intend to wear and follow the retailer’s sizing guidance. Compare grip and support requirements with advice from your coach, while checking the exact product rather than assuming every boot in a named range is identical.

For mouthguards, headguards and other protection, check the player’s fit and the club’s requirements separately. Players with braces may need a suitable mouthguard configuration. Protective equipment does not remove contact-sport risk; correct fit and use remain important. Allow for a pump, kit bag and any missing essentials when comparing the total order.

Common buying questions

Is a size 5 ball automatically right for every player?

No. Check the player’s team or competition requirements. The correct size takes priority over price or team branding.

Can I replace screw-in studs with any stud?

Check the boot manufacturer’s compatibility instructions and the relevant rules. Thread, length and design should not be assumed interchangeable.

Does a team-branded ball mean it is the match ball?

Not necessarily. Confirm the exact product’s intended use and construction on the retailer page.
