Choose a home treadmill around the way you will use it and the space it needs while running. A machine that fits when folded can still be unsuitable for your room, delivery route or training.
Start with walking, jogging or running
Write down the activity you expect to do most often. A compact walking machine and a treadmill intended for regular running can differ in belt size, speed, frame design and the manufacturer’s intended use. Check the exact model’s stated suitability before comparing the price.
Consider every person who will use it. Compare the maximum user weight and adjustment range with your household, and check whether the warranty covers the use you have in mind. A domestic machine should not be assumed suitable for a shared commercial gym.
Measure operating space before folded space
Mark the full machine footprint on your floor and add the manufacturer’s required clearance around it, including behind the belt. Allow a route to get on and off without climbing past furniture. Check ceiling height with the deck raised if you plan to use incline.
Folding helps with storage; it does not reduce the space needed during a workout. Check the folded height, how the deck lifts and lowers, and the instructions for moving the machine. Transport wheels do not make a heavy treadmill suitable for carrying upstairs alone.
For an upstairs room or garage, check floor suitability, ventilation and the manufacturer’s temperature and humidity requirements. Noise includes footfall and vibration as well as the motor. A mat can protect suitable flooring, but it does not guarantee quiet operation or solve an unsuitable floor.
Compare the specifications that affect your workout
- Belt dimensions: compare the usable running surface, not the overall frame dimensions.
- Speed and incline: check their ranges and whether incline is motorised or adjusted manually.
- User limit and intended use: read the exact manufacturer’s limits, rather than judging strength from the machine’s appearance.
- Controls: look for accessible speed controls, a clear display and the supplied safety key or stopping system.
- Motor information: power figures can use different rating methods. Compare the manufacturer’s intended use and sustained-performance information as well as the headline figure.
A longer feature list is useful only if you will use those features. Check whether workout programmes work without an app, whether connected services need a subscription, and whether the device you own is supported. Confirm what remains available when a trial subscription ends.
Check delivery, assembly and support before paying
Measure doors, stairs and tight turns along the delivery route. Compare the packaged dimensions and weight, which may be larger than the assembled machine. Ask whether delivery is to the kerb, doorstep or chosen room, and whether assembly and packaging removal are included.
Read the retailer’s returns process for a large assembled item, including collection costs. Check the warranty for parts, labour and service arrangements, and follow any maintenance requirements. Add delivery, assembly, a suitable mat and optional subscriptions to the machine price when comparing the total cost.
Which compromise fits your room?
If space is tight, start with operating dimensions and clearance; reject machines that do not fit before comparing screens or programmes. If several people will use it, prioritise the belt, user limits and controls that suit everyone. If you need to move it after each session, compare its handling instructions and storage position carefully.
Browse our treadmill categories to narrow the models. The Workout For Less collection and Sport & Leisure UK collection provide supplier-specific browsing. Their collections contain other equipment too, so choose the treadmill category within the collection.
