Buying guide · Updated 9 October 2026
A cricket bat should match the player’s size, intended cricket and comfortable pickup. Compare materials and price after those basics. An adult short-handle bat, a developing-player model and junior protective equipment are separate choices; they should not be treated as a ready-made universal kit.
Start with size and the cricket you play
Check the bat-length guidance for the player and confirm whether the product is an adult or junior model. A heavier or longer bat is not automatically a better purchase for a growing player. Where possible, assess pickup rather than selecting only by a quoted weight.
Confirm whether the bat is intended for hard-ball cricket or another form of practice. Check your club’s requirements and any preparation instructions. A bat supplied with a protective face or described as ready to play may still have care requirements; follow the exact manufacturer’s advice.

English willow versus Kashmir willow: compare the whole bat
The Prism and Kahuna examples are listed at £34.99 and £39.99, while the GM Galaxy 606 is £149.99 in this snapshot. These are different bats with different materials and configurations. The prices do not prove a fixed performance benefit from switching material.
For a first purchase, compare the intended use, size, pickup and preparation alongside your budget. If you already play regularly, think about the handle and shape you prefer. Grain appearance alone is not a complete way to choose a bat, and individual bats can vary.
Budget for preparation and protective equipment
Ask whether the selected bat needs knocking-in, oiling or other preparation, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Confirm what the retailer includes in the package, such as a cover or protective facing. Care and storage affect ownership costs as well as the initial price.
Batting gloves, pads and a suitable helmet should be selected for the player, activity and applicable club requirements. Compare fit and coverage; a junior label is not interchangeable with an adult size. The junior gloves in the table are an example of this sizing check, not an automatic match for the adult bats.
Before you order
- Confirm bat size, handle configuration and intended use.
- Compare pickup and weight information for the exact selected bat.
- Check preparation, maintenance and included accessories.
- Select protective equipment by fit and relevant club requirements.
Common buying questions
Is English willow always the right first bat?
Not automatically. Compare fit, intended use, pickup and budget alongside the material. The right choice depends on the exact bat and player.
Does “adult short handle” fit a junior player?
Do not assume so. Follow the retailer’s sizing guidance and compare the player’s needs with advice from their club or coach.
Can I use a new bat immediately?
Check the exact manufacturer’s preparation instructions. Supplied treatments and “ready” descriptions can have conditions and ongoing care requirements.
